The Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa (JHIA) proudly welcomes a significant addition to its growing collection of archival treasures: Jesuit Catalogs dating back to the 1800s and 1900s. This material, sourced from the British Jesuit Archives, represents a pivotal period in the history of the Zambesi Mission and offers a rich resource for researchers, students, and historians.
These Catalogs document an important chapter in Jesuit Missions, showcasing their outreach, administrative records, and spiritual endeavors across Africa. Their arrival at JHIA not only enriches the institute’s archival holdings but also enhances opportunities for interdisciplinary research in African history, theology, and colonial studies.
The successful acquisition of these materials is thanks to the collaborative efforts of several parties. Ms. Rebecca Somerset, Archivist at the British Jesuit Archives, played a crucial role in coordinating the meticulous process of cataloging and preparing the shipment. The African Studies Association (ASA) facilitated the shipping, with special thanks to Gabe Adugna and the African Library Council (ALC) team for their logistical support.
